Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Heatwave peaks today with widespread moderate to major
HeatRisk. Minor cooling returns seasonably hot weather after
  today.

* Isolated showers and thunderstorms possible this afternoon near
the Oregon border and in western Nevada.

* Areas of smoke from nearby wildfires likely continues this week,
making for hazy skies at times.

.DISCUSSION...

Today will be the hottest day of our ongoing heatwave with daytime
highs in the 90s for Sierra communities and between 100-106F in
western Nevada valleys. Nighttime lows will provide little relief
from the heat tonight across western Nevada, especially for Basin
and Range locales where lows hover around 70F. This heat poses a
widespread moderate to major HeatRisk so be sure to stay hydrated
and limit time in the heat today!

Smoke from nearby wildfires will likely continue to filter into the
region this week, resulting in periods of hazy skies and air
quality impacts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are favored (10-
20% chances) in a couple areas this afternoon: 1) Lassen County into
N Washoe County and 2) from N Mono County into S Lyon/Mineral
County. A few showers or thunderstorms may form along the zephyr
front as it advances across western Nevada in the late afternoon,
but odds are only 5-10%.

Minor cooling begins Tuesday, accompanied by a slight increase in
afternoon breezes, and lasts through the upcoming week, providing
at least some relief from the heat after today. However, it will
remain seasonably hot with regional highs squarely in the 80s near
the Sierra and 90s in lower elevations, which is on par for mid-
July. Otherwise, the rest of the week is favored to be mostly dry
with low chances (10% or less) of showers and thunderstorms and
typical SW-W breezes each afternoon.

.AVIATION...

Smoke from regional wildfires continues to support areas of haze
this afternoon -- especially at KRNO-MCXP-KMEV and KMMH -- but
additional heating and increasing west winds should help disperse
smoke concentration through the afternoon. However, any residual
haze may impact slantwise visibilities this evening for these
terminals as the sun sets.

Expect continued density altitude concerns today, especially for
many western Nevada terminals where triple digit heat develops.
Otherwise, breezy west winds in the afternoon may pose low-end
LLWS impacts today and Tuesday for KRNO-KCXP-KMEV.
